Tradition

Velika planina is home to one of the oldest and best-kept herdsman’s settlements in Europe. The picturesque village with its tiny church and a museum depicting the life of herdsmen in the beginning of the 19th century is not just a fairytale scenery – it comes to life every summer, when the herdsmen bring their cows up to the mountain pasture.

The typical architecture of the settlement are small cottages covered with spruce shingles, retaining their traditional shape. The herdsman’s settlement is especially lively in the summer months when the herdsmen and their cows settle in the cottages. For some information about the history of the settlement, a visit to the Preskar’s museum is a good choice - during the grazing season it is open every day. You can also visit the chapel of St. Mary of Snow on the top of a little hill above the settlement. The chapel was first built before WWII by the most famous Slovene architect Jože Plečnik.
